For Immediate Release
Belknap Campground CLOSED for Repairs
SEQUOIA NATIONAL FOREST, CA - Belknap Campground,
located in the Western Divide Ranger District, Giant Sequoia
National Monument is closed to campers for the next 6 months
for repairs and then for the winter season. The Sequoia
National Forest has contracted with Keeling Construction, Inc.
to replace the water system in the campground and to add
the concrete skirting around the existing toilet to make it fully
accessible. Work will start as early as Monday October 19th,
2009.
The road going through Belknap Campground accessing the
Nelson Trail will remain open, travelers may experience
delays. The old water system was in need of replacement,
the new one will meet the State water meter requirements.
Contract work will also occur at the Trail of 100 Giants
parking lot where concrete skirting will be built around
the existing restroom facility and new water spicket
installed to make them fully accessible. This work may
require a temporary closure of the lower portion of the
parking lot, however parking should be available in the
upper portion.
These two projects were funded through "recreation site
improvement dollars" in the amount of $124,831, made
possible by user fees. This funding comes from a
percentage of dollars that return to the Forest from fees
collected by the concessionaire, California Land
Management, at campgrounds or day use areas on the
Sequoia National Forest.
For more information please contact the Western Divide
District office at 559-539-2607 during normal business
hours Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
