Where to go trouting

Postby Calduke » Wed Feb 25, 2009 10:05 am

It looks like the Kern will not be planted this year.

Any suggestions for locations Spring/Summer?

Are you primarily asking about the Kern Valley area ?

Thanks for the interest.

Not necessarily in the Kern Valley. I will probably try the Kern a couple of times, C&R of course.
But perhaps I will need to go up north to Bishop and other areas. I really don't have any knowledge of the Bishop. I like the stream/river fishing.

I've heard some comments about Rock Creek?

Rock Creek is a beautiful place with a creek and lake that has been well stocked in the past and is suppose to continue. Any place up Bishop Canyon is also good fishing. Both places have plenty of nice campgrounds, just remember to put all your foodstuff in the bear lockers. The Lower owens has good fishing in the winter but summertime flows can be hard to fish and theres not much decent camping on the river itself.

For the Kern area I hope that they continue to increase the stocking in the lake. Without any stocking in the river it's going to be slow fishing, especially with so many not practicing C&R. there are still a lot of smaller creeks in the Kern Valley area that I think will continue to be stocked and as long as the fishing pressure dosen't get too great are very nice places.

April is near. Weather is encouraging. Time to see some posts on fishing strategies for the spring/summer. Kern River or Bishop area?

I did a backpacking trip above the Johnsondale bridge this past weekend. The fishing was very slow. The river is running a little high and very cold up that high still. The guys down closer to Kernville were doing much better.
