4/20 Crappie

Decided to harass the crappie one more time before the rain came. Fished with a friend from 9:30 to 11:30 in the North Fork Marina area.We were both fishing the bobber and jig combo approximately 3 feet deep. I started off with my trusty red/white tube jig for a slow pick. My buddy was doing much better with the 10 cent Walmart feather jig in blue/white. After watching him out fish me about 3 to 1 I decided to switch over to the feather also. I didn't have any blue or dark colors so I had to stay with red and white. The feather definitely got bit better than the tube and my fish count went up with it but they would not leave my buddy's blue/white jig alone. He continued to get twice the bites as me. Eventually they ate all the feathers off until there was only a little blue and white dubbing left and he still was killing them. Some times color does matter.
We had to stop as the rain and wind finally started. We each caught at least 25 fish with 3/4 of them keepers, all released. Not bad for 2 hours. We were having trouble in the beginning with fish coming off but opening up the gap in the jig helped a lot. Adding crappie nibbles didn't seem to improve anything and my buddy never used them at all. 10 cent jig, 25 cent bobber, all the tackle you need. Sorry no pictures but the camera on my phone quit working after it took a swim in the river a while back. I wish AT&T offered the G-Zone.
They are predicting mid to upper 70's for the weekend. The weather should be perfect.
Now let's see, maybe crappie in the morning, trout in the river after that (see Kern river trout post) followed by a white water rafting trip and maybe a sunset mountain bike ride. Looks like I'll be busy.

What an awesome report. The picture your painted for my mind made me wish I was there. Thank you for the info plus the tips. One question, were the two of you in a boat, or on shore? Just want to know if I am imagining the correct scene.

Thanks again,
Nag

We were fishing from shore. That's what is so good about it. Everyone can get in on it. Just grab your pole, a couple jigs and you're set.
