The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) invites all anglers to celebrate Labor Day by fishing in Californias spectacular waters even without a license.

This Sept. 6 is one of Californias two Free Fishing Days (the other was July 4), when residents and nonresidents alike can try their hand at fishing without needing to buy a sport fishing license. Free Fishing Day is the perfect opportunity to introduce a friend or relative to the lifelong sport of fishing.

All fishing regulations, such as bag and size limits, gear restrictions, report card requirements, fishing hours and stream closures remain in effect. Every angler must have an appropriate report card if they are fishing for abalone, steelhead, sturgeon, spiny lobster or salmon in the Smith and Klamath-Trinity River systems.

Anglers should also check the rules and regulations for any waters they plan to fish. Any entry fees at lakes or reservoirs may still apply.
