Hi All,
We need your help, the local biologist for California Department
of Fish and Game has informed me that, DFG is getting ready to
negotiate with the Center for Biological Diversity and Pacific
Rivers council about removal of certain bodies of water from the
no-stocking list. That would be good news but, she indicated
that the Kern would not be included in those negotiations. She
also indicated that she did not understand why not but the
decision came from the head of Fishery Department.

We need letters, telephone calls, emails or any other form of
communication to: various media outlets (newspapers, TV news
casts, Blogs), local and state elected representatives and the
Director of Fish and Game to try and get stocking returned to
the Kern River.

I suggest that someone more articulate than myself compose a generic letter that we can address and send. Being sure to use all the necessary catch phrases and critical points. I am aware of the situation, but not intimate enough to craft a pursuasive letter.

I wonder if the taxpayers are paying for this? *sigh*

Here's my letter to the DFG Director--hope it will help others to compose their own. Whether it or any other letters will make a difference, who knows?

Good afternoon--

I am sending this brief letter to urge the CA Department of Fish and Game to do whatever it takes to resume stocking of the Kern River. And please do it immediately--complete the required reports or whatever business that is causing this injustice.

As a native Californian, avid fisherwoman and a taxpayer, I believe it is utterly senseless to impose a ban on trout stocking in a river that has been stocked for nearly 100 years; is dammed up and down river over many miles; is a haven for camping, fishing and rafting for thousands of people annually; and has a small, fragile local economy that cannot afford the loss of tourist and sportsmen dollars. By comparison, areas in Mono and Inyo counties have not had this imposition although many have much more robust economies to fall back on, e.g. Bishop, Mammoth Lakes and June Lake.

I live in the Los Angeles area and have been traveling to the Kern River for fishing and camping since I was a child with my parents--all told nearly 40 years. Please help the local economy, the taxpaying citizens, and the license-purchasing fisherpersons to continue to enjoy this very special place.
