Stocking the Kern above Riverside Park

Hello All,
Looks like it's time to get the gear out and fire up the forum for reports. I'm told by Greg Kollenborn from DFG, and former Hatchery Mgr., that they will stock the Kern River between Kernville's Riverside Park and the Power House tomorrow morning. We're sending the Courier photographer to capture the plant. Don't yet know if this will be a permanent thing or they are just pushing the envelope to make a statement, regardless of current litigation standing. But if true, it's great, great news for us all and just in time for Whiskey Flat this weekend. If it falls through I will post again. Oil up the reels, even if it doesn't happen...there are Alpers in the lake and they're bitin' and fight'n. Mike

This is the Great news we've been waiting so long for, I saw they filed another lawsuit. We take back our country one step at a time, starting with the Kern. Tell John Strange and Cheryl that we're coming back, can't wait. Thanks to all for keeping up the fight, and remember we have to keep fighting against these enviromental wacko's that don't give a crap about the regular folks and the destruction their absurd lawsuits cause.

There is a lot of conflicting statements out there right now but this is what we know from third hand sources. It's about time that these groups have to prove that there is a danger to species in their lawsuits instead of just filing for injunctions and forcing others to prove there isn't a danger. Maybe a lawsuit to recoup the money that this area lost during the last 13 months is in order. Just keep your fingers crossed that this ridiculous fiasco is done.
Just after witnessing the stocking at Riverside Park, we were advised about the Center for Biological Diversity seeking another injunction. However, this was supposedly released as a correction from Noah Greenwald, M.S. Endangered Species Program Director Center for Biological Diversity:

We are challenging the EIR/EIS over impacts to Native Species. According to Dr. Peter Moyle, the Hardhead Minnow, which is the only known species of concern in the Kern below SCE Fairview Dam, is apparently doing okay in the presence of extensive stocking. There is thus currently a low likelihood of harm to native species in this reach. We are not planning to seek an injunction to stop stocking the Kern River at this time.

"We are not planning to seek an injunction to stop stocking the Kern River AT THIS TIME." So when are they (Center for Bio Diversity) going to seek an injunction? When the right judge can be found to rule in their favor? Words can not describe the angst these organizations can cause!

Yup, at this time that's a key phrase. However, I'd like to know why we spent 13 months without stocking when it was known and stated in the hatchery biologist's report that the hardhead minnow WAS NOT in jeopardy from fish stocking. Arbitrary and capricious shotgun injunctions without any documentation, whatsoever, proving in fact a real danger to any species should be dismissed as harassing and frivolous unless proof that a lawsuit is actually necessary by paying for their own study first.
And now, Noah Greenwald, Endangered Species Director, from Center for Biological-Diversity supposedly stated in an email that "For the record, I did not state that hardhead minnow would be harmed by stocking, nor did we discuss that species." And regarding Kern fisheries added; "_within certain reaches there is currently a low likelihood of harm to native species. Thirteen months of lost income, goodwill and a top standing as a destination for anglers, because we were somehow erroneously included on some guppy hugger's list...guilty and sentenced without proof. The way of the world now.
We all already know how useless the government is. Incompetence, and failure by agencies to provide their required reports is not a valid excuse to destroy the economy of hundreds of innocent California communities. Another question is why the lawsuit was instituted by an Oregon environmental group. Did the Oregon fisheries benefit from the shutdown of hundreds of California lakes, rivers and streams? Lots of questions, no answers, and with the current joke known as government (at all levels), we don't expect to get any either.
On the good side. The hatchery plant at Riverside Park stocked what we refer to as "Trophy Trout", nice 4-6 pounders. Hope they keep the size up now that the photo op is over. Whiskey Flat ends today, crowds are leaving and the fish await.

My friends and I are looking forward to our 10th. annual Saint Patrick's weekend Kern River fishing adventure. Yes 10th. annual. Last years trip was a blast! Including limits of beautiful rainbows on our stringers. This years trip was panned as usual, stocking or not. However our spirits have been lifted and our hope renewed thanks to the news of recent trout plants in the river. We are looking forward to tight lines and full bellies this year. Please tell the folks at the River Kern General Store that the Irish are coming, and we are looking forward to a few extra yummy egg sandwiches once again! I am giddy with anticipation!
Sincerely,

p.s. This is not a real fishing club. We are just a bunch of goofy bastards.
