This is terrible for the Kern River fishery.

Not sure how this 50% cut translates;

Same quantity of fish - smaller size

OR

less frequent planting

As a follow-up to my post;

I'm strictly catch-release so I'm no threat to the population.
This 50% cut provides another reason to practice catch-release. The fish grow bigger and more people can enjoy fishing; particularly the
young beginners.

Catch and release great! Wish we could convince more folks to help sustain the fishery during these extreme droughts using catch and release.

However, smaller fish mean easier feasting for birds and squaw fish. Harvesters need to harvest more fish to feel full :-(
Smaller trout can handle high river temps better than bigger trout. Another lousy snow pack means that the few holdovers and wilds that have survived will have another tough year again. Buy a thermometer and avoid fishing the Upper Kern when temps exceed 70 degrees. Most of the water below Fairview Dam was lethal from June 15 to Oct 1st and likely will be that way again. Even water above Fairview Dam to Johnsondale Bridge was lethal after 10 am until dark in the same time frame.

Thanks Flyboy. I guess this forum is for you and me.

Is anyone fishing these days and success?

I notice no planting for 4 weeks now.
