Mountain Men?

I was at the store across the street from Riverside Park this last July and saw two guys with mules with for sale signs on them. The fellows looked like mountain men with buckskins on and enough beard to look like they had not shaved or bathed for a long time. Does anyone know where these guys came from and if they really came out of the hills? What was there story?
