Trapping

I know its out of the subject of hunting, but I was just wondering if trapping (leg traps) is still legal? I lived in the KRV as a kid in the mid 80's and my step dad would trap for pelts in the winter. It was all legal with registered traps and such. I havent seen anyone trap since then (California or Florida, my current residence). It was very much an art. I remember scouting out places and tracking paw prints to find the best place to trap for different species as well as which scent to use. I will never take up the trade, but just wondered if it was still legal and if folks were still trapping. I really miss the KRV and WILL move back someday.
