Upper Kern 9/4-5/08

Arrived at Fairview about 6pm 9/4 and fished until dark. Caught and released 19 trout ranging 11-16 inches. Was at Fairview 3 weeks ago and found the water this trip to be warmer and the level to have dropped significantly. On 9/5 fished Fairview, Headquarters, and the KR3 plant. Caught and released at least 35 fish between my buddy and I mixing up baits from a single egg on a #10 or #12 barbless single hook, to a gold Panther Martin or a gold Blue Fox. Landed a huge rainbow at the power plant that may have been close to 3 pounds on the Blue Fox. A real good trip for a day and a half and a 3 hour drive. Just what the the doctored ordered to relieve the stress from the daily grind.

I was disappointed although at the amount of trash along the river at Fairview. Apparently, the camp host was fired before Labor Day. Three weeks ago, the area was in better condition; not completely trash free, but much cleaner nonetheless. I saw the camp host then reminding folks to carry out their trash and picking up the area daily. I heard him several times refer ti the campground as "his" and seemed to take pride in the condition of the area and wanted our camping experience to be a good one. It's unfortunate that when a camp host is hired that cares about his work, he typically doesn't last long.

t13, thanks' for the report. It sounds like an excellent weekend. Did you notice if the amount of people camping is starting to go down? I'm planning a trip in a coup[le of weeks and can hardly wait.

It appeared many of the campsites were reserved Friday night. Thursday evening and Friday morning I am guessing there were no more than 8 campers in Fairview. I typically stay a week or two in August but are considering going up in September next year as the crowds diminish after Labor Day.

Does anyone know if they hired a new camp host for Fairview? Also curious as to why Donnie and Fred got fired, I think they were doing a good job for the most part, and I know it's hard to get people to work for that CLM company. Going to try and make it up there in the next couple of weeks. This is the best time of year for the upper river, and alot less crowds. We were last up there in August, they were cleaning some of the pens at the hatchery, so they dumped twice the usual amount in by the powerhouse, man was that fun, until my son got a Panther Martin deep into his finger, he was a real trooper though. Keep the reports coming.

Does anyone know if they are stocking the riverside park area in kernville? With the low flow and the high temps. I would not be surprised if they cannot currently stock that area. I have enjoyed my trips to kernville for the past 40+ yrs. but unfortunately can't scramble around the rocks of the upper kern anymore. Thanks for any availabl info.

I just got back from the river today and there are plenty of fish to be caught. The mornings are best while the water is still a few degrees cooler.
