Bern's first fish!

Postby lmartin780 » Mon Oct 06, 2008 5:16 pm

Went up to the Kern on September 20th. Introducing my sweety to fishing. I gave her a 10 minute lesson on trout fishing and turned her loose.... about 20 minutes later I've worked down river about 80 meters, I look up and her pole is doubled over. I give her a thumbs up... then I notice the fish break the surface... I high tale it up to her and talk her through landing her first trout! I took this guys sister out of the same pool about 30 minutes later. I think she's hooked now...

Simple rig... 16 gold treble hook about 14" below a split shot. 4 lb. test. Fished on a dead drift. I used Pautzke's and she used power bait. And I agree.... she is a cutey!!

WOW!!! What a beautiful fish. About 20yrs ago when my husband and I first started going camping i used to watch him fish until i said..."I" want to do that. Well we didnt have a pole for me and we were camped at Ant Canyon before everyone knew about the place. We found some line and enough stuff to put a line around a tin can...yes tin can. I put some bolognie on my hook and threw it out in a deep hole. Not long after that i got one heck of a bite. Obviously i couldnt wrap the doggone line around a tin can so i ran up the bank with my husband cracking up the whole time...where were the camcorders then??? As i ran up the bank, my 3lb trout came flying up behind me flopping away. Biggest fish i ever caught there. Thought it was a funny story. Coming up for 4 fun filled days with the hubby and kids at thanksgiving, hope to post some awesome pictures of relatives of the fish in this picture by Bern...lol.

Thanks for posting, awesome fish and im sure she is hooked, i know after my tin can incident my husband bought me my first pole and reel and i was hooked from then on.

Great post Larry,
I'd like to put that photo and info in the Kern River Courier. You will get the photo credit. If you are interested please PM me with full names, ages, dates, camp location, where you're from and a little bit about the first trip intro to fishing. I'll take it to the office with me. Deadline for this Friday is today but I should be able to get it in next week.

Our Jarhead Gunny son just went back to Iraq for the 4th time. Came up and did some fishing up river before he left. He grew up at Road's End and knows all the right locations. He does great every time but didn't get anything near that size this trip. He'll go absolutely nuts. The trophy trout program from the planting base lives on. Thanks. Mike

Impressive. Beginners luck. A true natural. Whatever you call it, just call it the best first catch I have ever seen.
WOW
That is like nailing a huge jackpot at Vegas on your first pull on the $1 machines.
Tell her she oughta quit now. THere are people that have fished a lifetime and havent caught anything near that big.

The only thing to improve upon the fish would have been a full tail.

Wow! Nice fish. In the ten years I worked on the Kern that is only the third fish that size I have seen pulled out of the river. That trout could possibly be a planted trout in the lake that has found its way up the river which is not unusual. Great fish though and thank you and the lovely lady for sharing.
