Any More Plants?

Postby bnaginey » Wed Feb 24, 2010 9:53 pm

So there has not been much news about fish plants on the Upper Kern since the park was stocked. Was that it? Can we expect more to come? Or is the Kern River still in legal limbo? Would love to hear something, one way or the other.

I have been keeping an eye on planting schd. and while the lake is allways on the schd. the river has yet to be, even the one time they did plant two weeks ago. I think it may have been for show, but I hope I am wrong.

Just checked the DFG planting schedule and see that the Kern is scheduled for planting the week of the 28th. sometime. From powerhouse #3 to the park. That is great news! But why only up to the Powerhouse? We are planning to camp at Headquarters the third week in March. Would love to see these plants start migrating north if you know what I mean. If there are any other goofy bastards out there swing by an say hi in March.

We don't have any info on any restrictions beyond the Power Plant yet. But we do know the stock is hardy in size. The following photo shows one of 150 trophy trout that was added with the regular plant at points between Riverside Park and the Power Plant on Wednesday this week. We'll try to get some info on plants further up river. Seems they are being cagey and stepping lightly right now.

The guy holding the fish is Danny Zide, a technician at the hatchery. The photo was taken by the hatchery manager, Marvin Waters.

After last weeks plants the fishing has definitely improved. The rain brought increased flows and stained water but fish are being caught. 2 of my guests each took fish averaging 5 lb. Heading out now for my own turn. Sun is shining, fish are biting.

ARE YOU SERIOUS !?! That should be an awesome fight. Last year's trip was slim pickin's for us, but the fight on those now-native fish was pretty nice for a change. Look ing forward to our trip this summer.

Even in years past, the Kern doesnt get a full stocking in the winter/early spring. Dont expect a full stocking until later in the year.
I may have to sneak up this Sunday for some Kern River action. That gets me pretty excited

We're told that they are stocking as far up river as Fairview right now. We haven't been able to confirm that, but we believe the source is fairly reliable. We've been directing people to the lake for the quantity and quality fish these past months, but we've heard from locals who have been doing very well in the river lately now that stocking his resumed.

Be sure to get a copy of the 2010 fishing regs. There has been some rule changes...some for the better.
