Any recommendations for upper Kern for a novice? What salmon eggs are best, lb line, and hooks, does power bait work well? Any info is greatly appreciated!

I'm pretty much a fly fisherman only these days but when conditions cause me to use a spinning rod here is what I use. The only eggs I'll use are Pautzes Balls of fire, no other egg out fishes them as far as I'm concerned. I don't have a preference between red or green label but some guys do. I use to use a treble hook but now I use a single egg hook and just enough split shot to get it down. I never liked Power Bait in the river but again some guys swear by the stuff.

Green label salmon eggs. pautzkes ball o fire
Line Nothing heavier than 4 lb
Hook: Single egg hook size 10 maybe even a 12 I like the Mosquito Hooks from Owner. They are a little pricey, but they stick the fish.

I have used orange power bait and power worms. Crickets are another bait to consider

You can even come up empty handed and buy all the tackle you need at the James store. They have knowlegable people there that can help you. Stick with the bait and just enough weight to sink it and let if drift downstream. If you put too much on it will get stuck on the bottom. Your going to loose tackle no matter what you do. If you want to use spinners. Try the Panther Martin black with yellow dots. I have had the most luck with this color combo.
Good luck!
